You will find some of the most breathtaking scenery in all of New England in the Northern Region of New Hampshire. This outdoor recreation paradise boats miles of hiking and snowmobiling trails and most of the 48 mountain peaks over 4,000 feet, making peak bagging a favorite pastime. The White Mountains is a region unto itself with natural and man-made attractions including 17 alpine and cross country ski areas, adventure parks, and grand hotels reminiscent of another era like the impressive Mount Washington Hotel.
One of the best fall foliage drives is along the Kancamagus Highway, from Lincoln to North Conway that cuts through the 800,000 acres of the White Mountain National Forest. It is considered one of the most beautiful drives in New England, and we agree. For folks not so inclined to strap on the skis or hiking boots there plenty of ways to enjoy mountain vistas from The Cog Railway and the Mt. Washington Auto Road that provide access to the top of Mt. Washington, New England’s highest peak, to the Tramway at Cannon Mountain with incredible views up and down Franconia Notch, or the gondola at Loon Mt.
A few of our favorite family attractions include the Polar Caves, in Rumney (kids will love the lemon squeeze), Clarks Trading Post, in Lincoln home to the trained bears, meet Cinderella at Story Land in Glen, and Santa’s Village where its Christmas all year long.
Throughout the region are country stores, maple sugar shacks, and breweries such as the Woodstock Inn & Brewery in Lincoln a great stop on the way to and from a hike or skiing. One of our all-time favorite things not to miss are the Lupines which blanket the Sugar Hill area in June followed up with breakfast at Polly’s Pancake Parlor. When the weather is not conducive to outdoor pursuits, North Conway is outlet shopping heaven along with lots of great restaurants, small shops and the home of the Conway Scenic Railway offering valley and notch tours.
